Regulations and Safety: Important to Keep in Mind When Removing Birds

There are regulations regarding the methods used to remove birds that must be followed to avoid legal issues and ensure humane treatment of animals. Safety is also critical, especially when implementing removal techniques, as some methods require use of ladders.

Regulations on poisoning, live trapping and habitat destruction aim to prevent unintended harm to birds and other wildlife. Only use poisons, drugs or techniques specifically meant to target the birds you want to remove. Never use non-selective chemicals that could poison other animals as well. Live trapping must only be used, then birds released in suitable habitats away from the treatment location. Habitat modification should never completely eliminate access to food and shelter long-term.

Some key regulations to be aware of include:

  • Migratory Bird Treaty Act – Makes it illegal to take, for sale any migratory birds except under the terms of a valid permit.
  • Endangered Species Act – Protects endangered and threatened bird species and their habitats from activities that may harm the species.
  • California Department of Fish and Wildlife – Regulates any activities that may negatively impact birds or their environment . Permits are required for some removal types.
  • Local regulations – Many cities, and Home Owner Associations have their own ordinances on pest control, animal control and environmental protection that could apply to bird removal. Check with local authorities for any regulations before proceeding.

Safety should be prioritized, especially when using techniques that could lead to injury if proper precautions are not followed:

  • Always use necessary safety gear like eye protection, gloves, etc. when using bird spikes, wires or repellents.
  • Only install or remove bird controls when ladders or lifts are on level ground and stable. Never overreach or overbalance.
  • Be extremely cautious when working around powerlines. Never install or remove controls in a way that could cause lines to sag or come into contact.
  • Familiarize yourself fully with the installation and removal process before proceeding to avoid damage to property or injury.
  • Consider hiring a professional for any removal that involves complex installation, the use of heavy equipment, working at high elevations or exposure to hazardous materials.

Following regulations, using humane methods and prioritizing safety will ensure your bird removal efforts are effective and do not cause unintended harm.
