Dryer Vent Cleaning: Using a Flexible Vent Brush

Dryer vents require routine cleaning to function properly and ensure safety. Built-up lint and debris can clog and damage vents, increasing fire risk and reducing drying efficiency. While vacuuming and rigid brushes can help, a flexible vent brush is often the best tool for deep cleaning. Here’s how to use one for thorough dryer vent cleaning.

Purchase a quality flexible vent brush.

Look for one with rotating rubberized bristles and a telescoping handle. The brush portion should be 5 to 8 inches long.

Next, disconnect the dryer from power and disconnect the vent hose from the rear of the dryer. Then, insert the vent brush into the tubing through the hose opening. Slowly push the brush all the way through the vent tube.

Turn on the rotating brush and begin pulling the brush back through the tube. The rotating bristles will scrape away built-up lint. You may need to pause periodically and remove accumulated debris.

If any bends or turns exist in the vent, insert the brush and twist it gently as you pull the brush through. This will help scrape the sides of the vent at the bends.

For vents with multiple branches, insert the brush into each branch separately.

Once you have pulled the brush back through the entire vent system, visually inspect the vent for any remaining debris or blockage. Vacuum the vent thoroughly if needed.

In short, a flexible vent brush provides a focused deep clean of dryer vents. The rotating and telescoping design allows the brush to conform to curves and corners while scraping away built-up lint and grease. For optimal dryer efficiency and fire safety, clean your dryer vent regularly with a flexible vent brush.
